Adults love YA Fiction too! (More than they might be willing to admit)

According to this report from AARP more and more adults are coming out and admitting to enjoying YA Fiction.  According to a Becky Anderson, owner of Anderson’s Book Shops in Illinois:

This is the best genre for escapism

I couldn’t agree more.  And yet, I’d like to think my Sojourner Saga books like Once We Were Kings and From the Ashes, are more than just escapism, but meaningful and inspiring allegory as well.  Though they weren’t written to be didactic in nature, I’ve had several teachers reading this book with their classes and students and have been told that they’ve really enjoyed Once We Were Kings (teachers and students alike.)

  1. Comedian Mitch Hedberg once joked “Any book is a childrens book, if the child can read”.

I think the reverse holds true. YA might be the ‘target demographic’ but if a book has a good story to tell and is well written, it will span many groups and ages. The obvious example would be J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. How many adults stood in line at a bookstore at a midnight release for the latest book? (I did for each of the last three!)

I guess the point I’m trying to make is this… We all like what we like, so read the books you enjoy and don’t even think about it being a “kid’s book”. You’ll enjoy the experience even more if you just relax and read…

Sorry, didn’t mean to take over your blog…
